The Interconnectedness of Everything

Project Moon Hut

Organizations are complex entities that cannot be simply defined by their outward appearance. Take Project Moon Hut, for example. While it may seem like a traditional structure, the reality is much more nuanced. Yes, we have products, finance, marketing, and traditional functions, but in truth, the conventional visualization of an organization as a flat, tiered structure rarely reflects reality.

This is evident in the many cross-functional relationships, dotted line connections, collaborative projects, and overlapping responsibilities that defy rigid categorization. Such complexity calls for a broader understanding that acknowledges the dynamic and interconnected nature of modern organizational work.

To truly grasp an organization's inner workings and objectives, it's valuable to view the entire organization’s work as a network of interconnected activities that work in unison toward a shared desired outcome. While Venn diagrams or overlapping circles may hint at how different parts of organizations collaborate or share functions, even these representations fall short of capturing the full complexity.

In truth, there are significant overlaps of work and function throughout the organization. Take Information Technology (IT) as an example; its function is not confined to one department or silo but is intertwined across the entire enterprise. This interconnectivity defies simplistic visualizations and demands a more nuanced understanding, recognizing the complex web of relationships that underpin the organizational landscape.

All organizations, including Project Moon Hut, are dynamic and ever-changing entities rather than static constructs. They consist of various activities interwoven in intricate patterns, all contributing to the necessary progress required to meet desired outcomes. A more accurate depiction might be a three-dimensional graphic that demonstrates the continuous ebb and flow of functions, projects, products, and services, reflecting a state of constant flux.

A decision, no matter how large or small, in one area can impact the entire organization, setting off a cascade of consequences. Even seemingly tiny decisions can have ripple effects that resonate not only in the immediate present but continue to influence the organization for years to come.

To expand our thinking, we must look beyond typical perspectives of a closed environment. Project Moon Hut's evolution can be better represented as a dynamic, free-flowing 3D structure that grows organically over time. Think of a flock of birds in the sky, all flying in unison, expanding and contracting, moving over time. This analogy represents an organization's continuous morphing and movement throughout the day and over the long term.

Work is performed at various states of progress, with tasks continually ebbing and flowing, all driven by a shared pursuit of the Directive, our cause. In this view, the organization isn't a stagnant entity but a vibrant, ever-changing system, evolving and adapting so that collectively we can build a future within Mearth and an improved life on Earth for all species.
